Chemical Dependency Family Interventions©, by Eileen Wolfe

1. Interventions start with an assessment, which lasts 1 1/2 hours, and is conducted on the phone or in person with two people. The goal is to ascertain if addiction is present, what type of intervention needs to be offered, who might be involved, and what type of treatment needs to be recommended for the alcoholic/addict as well as for the family members/friends/co-workers.

2. The actual intervention can take about 1 1/2 days to prepare.

3. After the alcoholic/addict hopefully has gone for treatment, the rest of the team is followed for 6 months. This means that there are two follow-up sessions on the phone or in person with everyone, including the alcoholic/addict. Hopefully this enables a better chance for a long-term recovery, one day at a time, for everyone, as well as for identifying more alcoholics/addicts who need treatment in the interim.

"Wake Up"

With every possible chance, we must identify early and treat early all types of addiction, and then we must support the maintenance of recovery in everyone. Chemical dependency intervention by families needs to be commonplace, and the media needs to focus on recovery. Part of the problem is the adult attitudes toward early drinking in adolescents; they see nothing wrong with it, and some even drink with their children and think nothing of it. All people should look at their own relationship with alcohol and other drugs. There is a responsible, adult, mature way to approach alcohol when people are 21 years old. People who are in recovery with alcoholism or other drug addictions can live a productive, happy life. It is the people who are still drinking/drugging along with their family/friends/co-workers, the people who are addicted, who are in desperate need of help. As a society, we need to recognize this. We should not sensationalize the negative; instead, we should repeatedly showcase those healthy, recovering families and the families who are healthy and do not have alcoholism/addiction in their family background.

Make an effort to read this book and to take action by contacting an interventionist. Learn about the family disease of addiction. Recovery for the whole family is possible. Many people will do anything to get their alcoholic/addict help, but they don't think about their interaction with their alcoholic/addict. Some may say,"Well, maybe” or “I don't know” or “I will definitely think about that." However, they do nothing. A Chemical Dependency Family Intervention takes courage. This courage is energized when children, who were originally filled with fear, confront their addicted parents while being supported by their aunts, uncles, and cousins. The family promises to take care of them while their parents are receiving treatment. Courage is when a husband confronts his alcoholic wife with love, believing that recovery is possible, even when major dysfunction within the family exists.

Will any of you have that courage to follow through and to accomplish an intervention? Perhaps you will after you read this book and start talking to each other. The key ingredients are forgiveness, love, and persistence—along with courage. You may have none of these ingredients right now, but you can get them so that you can have a serene life with your sober family member with your family working on their own recovery road.
